Africa in perspective... PDF Print E-mail

...it's pretty common knowledge that a lot of map projections show Africa as smaller than it is. How much so?

Consider the first image that comes up when you Google "the world map".

Look now at the 'Robinson projection', the map in popular use since the 60's.

Then there's the 'Peters projection'. Peters argued that the maps before his skewed the way the world was viewed by the West. His, he claimed, was a true to scale map.

Because you can't really put a round ball on a flat surface. They don't show the one I grew up with. It had four or five splits at the top and bottom to accommadate the curves.

The Google map is the most accurate for all countries, as far as I can tell.

Peter's projection is good for equateral areas, but it stretches and thins the nortern quarter of the world unacceptably. It is just as bad as the ones that shrink africa. (And if you look closely at the grids on it, they are all funky near africa, which seems to exaggerate its size. Nice try Arno Peters. (As a disclaimer, I just skimmed the linked article, it may already say all of this).

I dunno, I am still dumbstruck at seeing the actual size in perspective. I remember once reading that Uganda alone could feed the whole world. Now I know Uganda must be a huge country. That size of a Continent and the natural resources there, and the general squalor on the Continent is pathetic.

I have only known a handful of people from Africa, mostly students and a few working class when I managed apts. I was struck by their seeming collective good nature. Very confusing trying to understand that country in light of the horrors that occur there.

Africa has it all : TRex
They have the most area to work in.
They have bountiful surface resourses.
They have bountiful mineral resourses.
They have an inferior civilization.
They have squalor and chaos.
They have moral relativists telling them
that they are fine and it is our fault.
