Bush administration helping Saudis with nuclear power... PDF Print E-mail

...what in the hell are they thinking? I suspect something along the line of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". It is, however, insanity to give the Saudi theocracy the means to produce nuclear weapons.

Very simple. : Aleksandr
If we help the Saudis, they get heavy water nuclear reactors, which cannot produce weapons grade uranium material. They can produce plutonium for the bombs but that can be regulated.

If we do not help them, they go to a Mr. A.Q. Khan and buy a Pakistani version of a light water nuclear reactor that sucks for energy production, but is pretty good at producing enough processed weapons grade material needed for the bomb.

In reality, the Saudis are so flush with dollars right now; they can buy any of the tens of Soviet nukes (some of them come with stylish suitcases) that are floating around different former KGB circles.

holy cow alek : dw
Man this is way out of line. Does it boil down to everybody will get nukes one way or another if they want them?

Maybe a satalite array that can EMP any nuclear power. We need to brag about our accoustic, neutron, microwave, biologial, chemecil electromagnetic weapons and every other nightmare weapon we have and let the world know; you threaten the survival of earth and we will genocide your petty sociopathic lil Hitler ass.

It depends : Aleksandr
All of this boils down to Iran. If they get nukes, everyone else will as well. If they do not then they will agree to a peaceful program built by the US, which would have controls in place to prevent them from getting nukes.

In reality, you can have nuclear power without nuclear weapons (ala Canada), but that would require constant monitoring and for the country to have no desire to have nukes. If Iran acquires a few, then it will leave the Saudi's with no choice but to get their own.

Iraq used to be the buffer that the Saudis used do defend themselves against Iran (both Iran and the Saudis hate each other with a passion going back to deciding who would take over for Mohammad after his death, the whole Shia and Sunni argument). Now with that buffer greatly weekend and the possibility of US withdrawal the Saudis have to find guarantees that they will remain free and not become an Iranian colony vis-a-vi Lebanon.

scratching head, have bald spot now : dw
Thanks for the insight. Still not sure what to think. What a revolting predicament this is. I would not let a Muslim, any Muslim have nukes or WMD's, for any reason whatsoever. But a lil late for that I guess.

Seems we might have used this situation to get the Saudi's to pump a lil extra oil for us as opposed to limiting production and destabilizing the already unstable confidence we have in the oil market. But it's already too late for that for that too. I don't see the Saudi's afraid of anything we will or won't do. Is this the price of future oil production being increased?

The reference in a couple places in the Bible, of the "abomination which brings desolation" standing in the place where it shouldn't (Mt Moriah) refers to nukes.

huh? : dw
Awe man Rex that stuff scares me. How is Mt. Moriah a reference to nukes? I thought the Abomination of desolation was some sort of terrible sacrilege in the Temple of God. Maybe on the site of Solomon's temple. Rusty now but nukes sound like the aftermath of the abomination.

maybe : TRex
The idea that it is nukes on Mt Moriah is only one possibility.

If it was sacrilige, that has already happened.
Maybe a couple of times.
Of course, that is nothing new.
Some of the prophesey Jesus spoke of
happened in 70 AD, when the Romans
sacked the city.

wonder? : dw
Hearing reports that speculaters are a;lso behind the price of gas. Makes sense that a stable market will limit profit margins for speculators. Could it be that simple and corrup?
