...for the amount he was favored on the loan. That's an effective way to defuse the situation (though it would have been even better had he reached out to a constituent in his area and help them refinance, since it's their money he and Countrywide took in preference to his).

be sufficient, depending on which charity the Senator writes the check to. There could be a little problem if he gave the money directly to a constituent, as he could then be accused of buying votes.

I find the existance of "Countrywide's `V.I.P.' program" disturbing, and again, this is one reason I rage against the machine, oops, I mean critisize corporational behavior.
