NY woman loses suit against cowardly transit workers...

...this woman was raped and two transit workers saw it happening but did nothing save call the police. If either or both had actually attempted to assist, the two or three of them could easily have overcome the rapist. Instead, they stayed safe in their booths and watched the screaming woman as she was dragged down a staircase where she was ultimately raped.

Cowards.

Related tangent: I once had a conversation with a criminal defense attorney who, when he learned I was in the military and just returned from Iraq, stated that he was glad we were trying to help the people of Iraq but there was no chance in hell he'd ever put himself in harm's way for that purpose.

When I asked if he was ever a witness to a mugging or assault, would he help? He said he'd call the police if it was safe to do so, but would not physically intervene. When I asked if it was him in a position where he needed assistance, e.g., a mugging or assault, would he hope somebody would intervene? Absolutely, he said. I'd hope someone like you were walking by.

I asked him if he saw the hypocrisy of his stance. Yes, he did, he told me, but it was a hypocrisy he could live with.

What has become of our nation?

That was a great story, but I can't blame the transit workers. As soon as they intervene and mess the guy up, he will sue them and the MTA. Their careers will be over and they will never find another cushy job. It is not about being afraid of being beat up, most MTA workers are big dudes, it is more about being afraid of getting into trouble for doing what is not in their job description.

The MTA benefits are so good I wouldn't do anything to mass that up either. You get full retirement with full benefits after 20 and you get a special disability pension to boot.

The MTA guys can't safely call the cops either,
since it would become public record that they
had made the call. The bad guys would come back
and shoot them.

Remember, these guys are in NYC, where only
the bad guys are allowed to have guns.

I suspect the only thing unique about this guy is his honesty in your conversation with him Rob. Did he have a clue how bad he sounded? Oh I forgot, He can live with stuff. I actually understand his point but like his confession, I would never publicly admit it.

I wonder if he was one of those fools that gets criminals off the hook cuz winning the case is all that matters.
