Shift military retirement to 401K payout?

19-Feb-12

Terrible, horrible, no good idea. How many people would stay 20 years for an $80,000 dollar payout that has to be invested into a 401K, etc., and/or isn’t collectible until retirement age? How many people would go to war for this multiple times over a 20 year period? I fear the answer is not a lot.

Disclaimer: I am biased, being just a couple of years from drawing said 20 year retirement. However, I believe that bias gives me insight into the problem, too, unlike the author of this article or others who propose this change.

TSA agent steals iPads…

02-Feb-12

…notable just to write: don’t trust the TSA with your iPads and sure as heck don’t check the things.

Second and third order effects…

29-Jan-12

The accident off the Italian coast is manifesting second and third order effects that will impact the area for several years.

Small victory for the public in foreclosure mess?

29-Jan-12

Maybe.  As Taibbi writes, it’ll depend on the actual wording of the settlement.  I’m less optimistic than he is about it.  I’m also curious where the money from said settlement would go? To the people who were affected by this perjury? Or to the State, for their use (ostensibly) in preventing and/or perusing offenders?

Who is targeting Iran’s scientists?

12-Jan-12

It’s probably effective to target the scientists, but I wish they’d take out the Iranian President.  It seems to me the former are just doing their jobs, where the latter is driving the crazy train.

iPhones days numbered?

11-Jan-12

If history (Apple history, that is) is any indication, something new will be along soon that incorporates all of the functionality of the device and more.  What that is, I lack the imagination to…well, imagine.  This could explain why I am not a millionaire.

3 lies about deficits

08-Jan-12

I don’t agree with the characterization of home ownership subsidies as “cruel.”  It comes across as an odd, emotive label in what the author otherwise attempts to rationally discuss.  I also don’t agree that private capital necessarily helps the impoverished shoemaker.  It will only do so if it benefits the same capital.

Recess appointments: a Presidential prerogative

08-Jan-12

The Senate is up in arms over the President’s use of the recess power recently.  I applaud President Obama for saying, “Enough,” and taking action.  (I do feel the CFPB appointment should have gone to Elizabeth Warren.  If he was going to buck Congress, why not with a more powerful nominee?)

iMessage death strike for BBM…or not?

07-Jan-12

I’m not sure I agree. They are different platforms for different machines. I have a Blackberry, an iPad, and an iMac. I’m not going to buy an iPhone for iMessage.

Scribd: documenting the digital age

07-Jan-12

This is a fantastic idea.  My blog got hacked a couple of years ago and due to a combination of blogging platform, inconsistent backups, and life events at the time, I may never retrieve the years worth of data.  This product would serve to provide a physical backup.
